Red heads

This little Woodpecker may be smarter than our first assumption about his choice of telephone poles. Although, you just never know where a termite might be crawling around.  Then again, perhaps he was just trying to communicate.

  1. I’ve been living in Japan for the past two years and we have these beautiful Pygmy Woodpeckers. The males are grey-brown with a small red patch at the nape. The females are a little bigger with mottled grey-brown, white feathers. Oddly enough, they prefer dead or decayed trees to live trees. I love to hear them knocking away.
