When the light in the sky falls to the horizon during harvest, farmers allow the deer to guard their harvesters from thieves. In November, we always hope the weather has been good enough in Indiana to have completed the outdoor chores in October.

Farming in Indiana can be a tad risky. The weather is never predictable. Rain at the wrong time will increase moisture in the pods rendering the bean useless at harvest time. Not very many people actually know what a soybean looks like up close. Take a gander.

Bean fields are plentiful throughout the Midwest. Just yesterday, the unharvested fields of gold were lined with delivery trucks awaiting their payload as the combine gathered the crop that pays for the farmer to live throughout the winter.
Here in Laporte County, not to be confused with the city of Laporte, we are accustomed to pulling to the side of the road as the 14 foot wide combines move from one field to another. Remember to wave to the driver as he passes by to ensure that you understand the country roads are not big enough for the both of you. The farmer is also required to wave a friendly “Thank you” as he continues on to his field of gold.
